Moors and Christians

In Busot, the Moors and Christians festival is a cherished tradition held in honor of San Vicente Ferrer and San José. Although officially celebrated since 1963, historical records suggest that this tradition may have been observed as early as the late 19th century.

The Moors and Christians Festival is celebrated a week after Easter, with several preliminary events leading up to it. One of these is the presentation of the Moorish and Christian captains, a moving ceremony held in the Canelobre Caves that introduces the key figures of the festival.

In addition to this, there are other events that occur before the main celebrations. These include a concert featuring Christian marches, Moorish songs, and pasodobles performed by the Busot Musical Union, as well as the traditional soparets. The soparets, which take place on the Saturdays leading up to the festival, involve each group enjoying a dinner in their own barraca.

Over the course of four vibrant days, the streets of Busot come alive with color and grandeur as they host the parades of the Moorish and Christian groups. The festivities include the dramatic “entraeta” on Holy Saturday, the impressive Moorish and Christian embassies, thrilling guerrilla reenactments, and a touching flower offering to one of the town’s patron saints, Saint Joseph.

The Moors and Christians Festival, celebrating San Vicente Ferrer and San José, stands as Busot’s most significant event, deeply rooted in its history, tradition, religion, and culture.

Three Kings Parade

On the evening of January 5th, Busot comes alive with magic as Their Majesties the Three Wise Men make their grand entrance. Around six o’clock, a festive procession departs from the Hermitage of San José, winding through the town’s streets and culminating at the Parish of San Lorenzo Mártir. Children eagerly anticipate the event, gathering sweets tossed along the route. Following the parade, the Three Wise Men themselves personally distribute gifts to the town’s youngsters.

Saint Anthony the Abbot

On January 17th, we celebrate Saint Anthony the Abbot’s day, who is the patron saint of animals. The following Sunday, a special mass takes place in the street, where the priest blesses the animals brought by local residents. Continuing the tradition, buns and Pan Benet, baked by many of the town’s women, are also blessed and then shared with family and friends alongside hot chocolate. The festivities conclude with a charity raffle featuring gifts donated by local businesses and individuals.

Saint Lawrence

On August 10th, San Lorenzo, the patron saint of Busot, is celebrated . In ancient times, this festival marked the beginning of the almond harvest, a traditional crop in the entire region. During the week there are numerous religious, recreational and cultural events for all ages.

  • Religious events: Mass, flower offering and procession in honor of Saint Lawrence Martyr.
  • Cultural events: Concert by the Unió Musical de Busot, theatre, ballet performance, etc.
  • Traditional acts: Big-headed parade, Dança de Busot.
  • Recreational activities: Summer cinema, indoor football tournament, foam party, inflatables, mobile disco and orchestra.

Urbanization Festivals

In addition to the traditional festivals, the Llano de los Pastores Urbanization festival has been a cherished annual event for years. Held over a lively and engaging weekend in July, it is followed by the week-long festivities in the Los Patos Urbanization in August. During this period, a variety of recreational and sporting events are organized for participants of all ages.

  • Costume party
  • Football tournaments
  • Bingo and Board Games
  • Music

The Night of the Ciris and Music

Celebrated at the end of July, Busot lights up with candle-shaped lights and a series of music concerts that make this night one of the most special of the year.
