The Busot Canelobre Caves

A wonder of nature

The Canelobre Caves are one of the main tourist attractions not just in Busot, but across the entire province of Alicante. Situated at an altitude of 700 meters on the northern slope of the Cabeçó D’Or mountain range—one of the few Jurassic formations in the province—they stand as a remarkable example of a karstic cavity.

Inside the caves, there is an expansive area of over 80,000 square meters, accessible through a 45-meter tunnel. Within this space, the interaction between water and rock has created stunning formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and structures resembling jellyfish, among many others.

The caves history

This cavity is found within Upper Jurassic limestone that dates back 145 million years. Although its existence was largely unknown until the 19th century, the discovery of the cave is credited to the Arabs in the 10th century.

The caves were not opened to the public until the mid-20th century. During the Civil War, the Republican army used them as an aircraft repair shop, at which time the current access tunnel to the cavity and several internal platforms were constructed.

The Canelobre Caves boast one of the highest vaults in all of Spain, soaring to an impressive height of 70 meters, resembling the grand vault of a cathedral. Among its remarkable features are ‘La Sagrada Familia,’ a striking rock column over 25 meters tall, and ‘El Canelobre,’ a stalagmite at the center of the chamber that is over 100,000 years old.

Activities

In addition to the accessible areas, the Canelobre Caves offer sections ideal for caving, making them a popular spot for enthusiasts of the sport. The caves are also renowned for their exceptional acoustics, frequently hosting musical performances in Alicante. This makes them a treat not just for the eyes, but also for the ear
